Club History – St Eunan’s GAA

Founding and Early Years

  • Established: The current St Eunan’s club was founded in 1930, following the amalgamation of earlier clubs in Letterkenny.

  • Founders: Key figures in the club’s formation included John Hourihan, Johnny Curran, and John Crumlish.

  • First Match: The inaugural match took place on 2nd March 1930 against Killygordon, resulting in a 3–1 to 1–4 defeat.

O’Donnell Park

  • Acquisition: In the 1930s, the club purchased land for £300 to establish O’Donnell Park.

  • Opening: The park officially opened on 2nd May 1937 with a blessing by the Bishop of Raphoe and matches between Donegal and Armagh (football) and Donegal and Antrim (hurling).

  • Development: Over the years, the park has undergone renovations and expansions, including the addition of a social centre in 1982.

Championship Success

  • Senior Titles: St Eunan’s has secured 15 Donegal Senior Football Championship titles, with the most recent victory in 2021.

  • Underage Achievements: The club boasts over fifty underage championships across various age groups, underscoring its commitment to developing young talent.

Notable Players

  • Charlie Mulgrew, Paul Carr, and Mark Crossan: Represented Donegal in the 1992 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship-winning team.

  • Brendan Devenney: Achieved national recognition, including being the leading scorer for Ireland in the 2001 Compromise Rules series
