Illistrin FC Club History

Terry Leyden and Raymond O’Donnell are regarded as two of the founding figures behind Illistrin FC, going back to the 1970s. Terry Leyden had a long military background, reaching position of Company Quartermaster Sergeant over his 42 years of service. Seeing football as having a positive influence on the community by bringing locals together and giving young people a standard of discipline and teamwork to aspire towards, he worked closely with Raymond O’Donnell to bring this vision to life.

Leyden was deeply involved in the administration of soccer in Donegal, serving as Disciplinary Secretary for the Donegal Junior League (for nearly 38 years), in addition to positions within the Donegal Women’s League, Youth League, Schoolboys League and the Mid-Ulster Football Association.

Inclusive Culture & Youth Pathways

Illistrin FC places a large emphasis on inclusivity and community engagement, providing opportunities for players of all ages to train, play and compete. Supported by the local community, the club provides training sessions, blitzes, friendlies and more. The youth teams have seen successes in recent history:

  • 2019: Winners of the Donegal Women’s League (Under 16s) Title – With a standout 5-0 performance against Finn Harps
  • 2025: Winners of the Ulster Subway Cup (Under 14 Boys team) – In a dramatic 3-1 comeback against Bonagee United
