Originally formed in 1978 as the Hospital Tennis Club on the grounds of Letterkenny General Hospital, the club grew into one of the North West’s leading tennis hubs. By the 1990s, rising membership and competitive success in the Donegal Tennis League had driven demand for more facilities, leading to the establishment of the new Letterkenny Tennis Centre at Murric-a-Boo on the High Road, which was officially opened on 24th August 1997.

Club History – Letterkenny Tennis Club

Origins and Formation

  • Founded: 1978 as the Hospital Tennis Club, utilising a single court at Letterkenny General Hospital.

  • Growth: By the 1990s, the club had expanded to 40 members, including six senior teams and one junior team competing in the Donegal Tennis League.

Relocation and Expansion

  • New Facilities: In 1996, the club moved to its current location at Murric-a-boo, behind the new Letterkenny Courthouse.

  • Official Opening: The Letterkenny Tennis Centre was officially opened on 24th August 1997.

Recent Developments

  • Facility Upgrades: In 2024, the club launched new facilities, including upgraded floodlights, new surfaces on four tennis courts, three children’s mini courts, and a completed clay court.

  • Expansion Plans: In 2025, the club secured additional land adjacent to its current location to further expand its facilities and activities.
