Liverpool FC History

Liverpool FC was founded in 1892 and it’s home games have been played at Anfield, in the northern part of the city, ever since.

They won their first ever game in a pre-season friendly against Rotherham Town (7-1), and have been no stranger to glory over the years, winning 20 league titles (a joint record with Manchester United), 8 FA Cups, 10 League Cups (a record) and 16 FA Community Shields. As well as this impressive list of domestic trophies, which includes Liverpool as Premier League winners in the 2024-25 and 2019-20 seasons, their trophy cabinet proudly displays a litany of honours from European and world competitions too.

Liverpool has won 6 European Cups – more than any other British football team, in addition to 3 UEFA Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. In 2019, their name was secured in the history books as the first English club to win the international treble of the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup.

The stadium at Anfield has been renovated and expanded many times over the years, including the most recent work on the Anfield Road Stand in 2024, which increased the overall capacity to 61,276 seats. This positions the stadium as the fifth largest in England.

The Legacy of Bill Shankly

Believe it or not, but the Liverpool home kit didn’t used to be all red. When the club was founded in 1892, the shirts and shorts were blue and white. Even after the change to red shirts in 1896, the team’s shorts were white up until 1964. According to former club captain Ronnie Yeats, a quick exchange between him and manager Bill Shankly lead to the whole kit becoming red. Shankly threw a pair of red shorts at him and said: “Get into those shorts and let’s see how you look,” before adding, “Christ, Ronnie, you look awesome, terrifying. You look 7 ft tall.”

Associating the colour of red with danger and power, the pair valued the psychological effect on opponents, agreeing that red socks would complete the look. With this the iconic all-red kit was born.

It was around this time that the fans adopted something which has also become an integral part of the club’s identity. The song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (from the Broadway musical Carousel) started to be sung by fans, and was soon adopted as the club’s anthem.

To recognise Bill Shankly’s success in transforming a then struggling Second Division club in 1959, to a major force across English and European football, the “Shankly Gates” were erected outside of Anfield. The words “You’ll Never Walk Alone” pay tribute not only to his success professionally, but for the way in which he connected with the fans and built a culture which prevails to this day.
