Arsenal FC History

Arsenal Football Club was founded in 1886 and has become one of the most famous names in football.

Originally founded by a group of workers at the Woolwich Arsenal Armaments Factory who decided to form a football team, the team first went by the name Dial Square, in reference to the sundial atop the entrance to the factory. The nickname ‘The Gunners’ comes from these origins.

Since then, the team has gone through numerous names including Royal Arsenal and Woolwich Arsenal before finally becoming Arsenal FC in 1914.

Arsenal played at the Highbury Stadium from 1913 until moving to the Emirates Stadium in Islington, North London in 2006. Named after the Emirates airline, the new home ground has a capacity of 60,704 seats.

Arsenal FC holds the record for the most FA Cup wins, lifting the famous trophy 14 times, while also boasting 13 league titles and countless memorable cup victories. Arsenal’s most fierce rivals are its close neighbours, Tottenham Hotspur, who they face at the North London Derby.

Arsenal Legends: Greatest Football Managers & Players

Included in the top 50 Gunners’ greatest players are iconic players such as Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp, and Ian Wright. Widely regarded as Arsenal’s greatest-ever player, Thierry Henry is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 228 goals

During his eight years at the Club he won two Premier League championships, two FA Cups, the Premier League ‘Golden Boot’ on four occasions and the PFA Player of the Year twice. He is one of Arsenal’s legends to be recognised with a statue at the Emirates Stadium.

Thierry Henry’s statue is joined by three others, including Herbert Chapman. Arsenal manager between 1925 and 1934, Chapman revolutionised the club with his new tactics (such as his ground-breaking WM formation) and training techniques. He also began using floodlights and numbered shirts.

Arsène Wenger is the football club’s longest serving and most successful manager to date. The ‘Wenger Years’ spanned over two decades where he helped Arsenal football club win seven FA Cups, more than any other manager in the competition’s history. The 2003/04 season remains one of the greatest achievements in English football history, as Arsène Wenger’s team went unbeaten throughout the entire Premier League campaign.
